Too Ill For Impact Colds and Flu are enemies of impact. In Too Ill For Impact I share my seven top tips for staying flu-free,and add some suggestions for what to do if they do manage to slip through your defences.
WORD MAGIC:BUILDING RAPPORT WITH WORDS People have different preferred ways of processing information. Our experience is processed through our nervous systems via our five senses: - Visual (Pictures)
- Auditory (Sounds)
- Kinesthetic (Feelings)
- Olfactory (Smells)
- Gustatory (Tastes)
and during this process we add Words (Self-talk). People’s preferred processing styles are generally reflected in the types of words and phrases they use,and these words and phrases are the ones they tend to like,as they find them easiest to process and understand. The most common preferred styles (in most cultures) are Visual,Auditory,Kinesthetic and Self-talk. A person with a preferred style of VISUAL will tend to like words and phrases such as: - look, picture, show, sparkle, crystal clear, glitter, focus, perspective, murky, appear, reveal, hazy, gaze, image, glitter, envision, observe
A person with a preferred style of AUDITORY will tend to like words and phrases such as: - say,speak,tell,loud,quiet,whisper,resonate,rhythm,harmony,tune-in,screech,raucous,ring,chime,discord,cacophony,noise,melody,buzz,shout
A person with a preferred style of KINESTHETIC will tend to like words and phrases such as: - grasp, pushy, feel, grab, pull, touch, rough, pressure, concrete, wobble, soft, heavy, slimy, solid, sharp, tickle, impact
A person with a preferred style of SELF-TALK will tend to like words and phrases such as: - logical, framework, basically, excellent, random, experience, procedure, knowledge, theory, principle, meaning, specific, interesting, typical, understand, optimal, idea
MAGICAL RAPPORT can be built with individuals by noticing (really noticing) their language and: - USING SENSORY WORDS which match the preferred style of the person you’re building rapport with e.g. “see”,“hear”,“sense”,“feel”,“bouquet”,“mouth-watering”
- UTILISING KEY PHRASES used by the person you’re building rapport with e.g. “super”,“early doors”,“top banana”
- USING COMMON EXPERIENCES AND ASSOCIATIONS e.g. a holiday in Spain,a mutual acquaintances, music
- APPEALING TO THE VALUES AND BELIEFS of the person you’re building rapport with e.g. making a difference, freedom, independence
Most groups of people will include all four dominant styles. The best approach is to use all the styles,so that everyone in the audience will get their preferred style some of the time. In the last two issues of Wright Time,“Top 10 Tips For Creating A Great First Impression”and “How To Get People To Fall In Love With Your Voice”,we’ve looked at developing rapport or ‘liking’through Body Language and Voice Tonality. Adding Words to your rapport toolbox will really enable you to generate magical rapport and turbo boost your impact!
