If you haven’t yet done so, I suggest you read my latest Blog now. It provides a valuable introduction to the Confidence On Demand exclusive material which follows…

Confidence On Demand – Step by Step

How would you like to Boost Your Impact by accessing one of the following feelings, just when you need it most?

  • Powerful
  • Energised
  • Confident
  • Decisive
  • Poised
  • Loved
  • Calm
  • Relaxed

You can do this using a technique called resource anchoring.

An anchor is created any time a person is in an intense state, and at the peak of that intense state or that experience a specific stimulus is consistently applied. The state and the specific stimulus become linked neurologically so that the state can be continually produced by setting off the stimulus.

There are five keys to successful anchoring:

  1. You must be in an intense state when the anchor is applied
  2. The anchor must be applied just before and during the peak of the state
  3. The stimulus used for the anchor must be unique
  4. The anchor must be repeatable and accessible (so you can use it in the future!)
  5. The more times the same anchor is created, the better the anchor

Let’s run through an example. For this example I’m going to anchor confidence, a universally helpful resource to have on demand, but you can choose whatever state you want – energetic, decisive, loved, powerful etc – just substitute "confident" with the state you want. Create a detailed list or picture of your most resourceful states as you recall situations when you were feeling at your very best. The more vividly you can remember in multi-sensory detail, the better.

The five steps to anchoring are:

  1. Fetch resource – Remember a time when you were totally confident. Remember a specific time. As you go back to that time now, float into your body and see what you saw through your own eyes, hear what you heard, notice what you noticed, and REALLY feel the feelings you felt of being totally CONFIDENT.
  2. Anchor stimulusAs you feel the state becoming intense and nearing its peak, firmly squeeze together the thumb and little finger of your non-dominant hand (or choose another anchor) and hold for 5-15 seconds until the intensity starts to subside.
  3. Break state - Think of something neutral to bring you out of your confident state – Football, Hockey, What you’re going to have for dinner etc.
  4. Test - Apply the stimulus by squeezing together your thumb and forefinger as used in Step 3 and notice the extent to which you go into your confident state.
  5. Repeat - Repeat Fetch-Anchor-Break-Test until it works well! You can use the same vivid memory or use another that invokes your feeling totally confident.

Vividly remembered associated specific memories are great for anchoring – better than general memories of the past or imagined states, but the best states for anchoring are naturally occurring intense states. Catch them and anchor them while you have them!

Give it a go. It works! Anchoring is VERY powerful, especially when we take control.
