“If you don’t like something change it;if you can’t change it,change the way you think about it.” Mary Engelbreit
Let me be clear. I am not against change. I’m not afraid of change. In fact I like change! I make a decent living from change –transforming businesses and coaching individuals. And I’m all for self-improvement!
I just think we don’t make the most of our natural ability to learn and adapt and progress second by second, minute by minute and hour by hour.
Instead we wait …and we wait …and we wait …until massive change and effort IS required –like a super-tanker waiting until it’s far enough off course to decide to do something about it,rather than making tiny frequent adjustments to keep itself on track.
At some point,we’re not changing course,we’re just driving the ship.
That’s the point!
‘Til next time.

Always looking for better ways to improve your results,is much better then telling yourself to change.

Great post. I love the comment “at some point we’re not changing course,we’re just driving the ship.”

It is a particularly insidious form of procrastination…. to wait until change needs to be massive and immediate.
Look at the US Social Security crisis that has been looming for thirty years…

Exactly, not change for the sale of change, but thoughtful change. I like it!

It’s so hard to change! Bad habits are soooo comfortable. But I guess that’s the point.

Changing the way we think about something can make it more palatable, but if we really don;t like something action is often a better choice.

Used change as an example in our sales meeting. Without change we will fall behind. Thanks for your insight.

Great post!
How would you differentiate needed change from change for the sake of change?

Some changes are hard to make and I know it’s just the fear in me but everytime I walk through it –it seams to disappear.

Yep,it’s like the person that is trim at 20,a little soft and pudgy at 30,over weight at 40,and obese at 50. Just a little change in exercise habits along the way would likely have prevented the long term weight gain.

Yea it’s is true we don’t respect our ability to change as the valuable resource that it is. Change is an easy thing to accomplish because we do it naturally from the first moment of conception. Change is waiting inside of us ready for its unlimited potiential to be tapped.

Hi Martin,
I think it was at a seminar back in 1993 that I first heard of that idea. And then following in the series, they brought in Dr. Maxie Maulsby,a cognative behavioral therapist. The idea of thinking differently first was amazing to me. In terms of Meyers Briggs typing,I am a Feeler not a Thinker. Doesn’t mean I can analyze, schedule, plan, choose and decide on things. Just feelings definitely motivate me.
He put forth the idea,“If you want to feel better, think better.”
Ground breaking in terms of influencing my life for the better.
Happy Relationships,
